Have an old kitchen? There’s hope…

Confession:  I have an old kitchen.  Maybe you have one too.  The good news is that we can fix most of our cabinet  problems with some nifty tools from Space Savers.

1.  Lazy Susans/Carousels - These have really improved since the our moms’ generation.  My personal favorite foturntabler small items (spices, baking supplies, etc.) is the double decker, stainless version (http://www.spacesavers.com/ststdotu.html).  It is sturdy, looks really sleek and it is easy to clean.

Also, take a look at the very pretty Linus acrylic varieties just recently added to the SS website.

2.  Baskets – These are such great organizing tools–there really isn’t a room that they can’t work in.  My most frequent uses for baskets in the kitchen are for those items that are difficult Continue Reading »

Q&A: General Home Storage

pot rackQuestion:  Organizer for canned vegetables and canned fruit, silverware, pots and pans and their lids. Where can I find these? Cassette tapes?

Answer:  What is your current storage situation for these items? You can find storage for all of the things you mentioned at www.spacesavers.com. If there are specific solutions you are looking for, I can help you come up with ideas.

For your canned goods, you can place shelves in your cabinets or your pantry to increase your storage space. I also use the larger versions of these in my lower cabinet to hold pots and pans. You can also keep your pots on a hanging pot rack.  I used this solution in the first house we had.  It had a kitchen the size of a small bathroom.

You could also store your canned goods on a rolling rack.  It’s especially nice if you stock up on items or buy when they are on sale. Continue Reading »

Tired of Cracked Eggs?

easter eggs.jpg

If you’re going to dye Easter Eggs this weekend, you’re going to need a lot of hard-boiled eggs!  Add some salt to your boiling water first. Several pinches will do.  This reduces the risk of eggs cracking while they cook.  You could substitute a bit of white vinegar for the salt if you prefer.

While you have the vinegar out, add a spoonful or two to your water when mixing up your dye solution.  It makes the colors turn out much more vibrant!
