Maybe you are one of those people who are looking for a reason to put off organizing? Well, okay, the fact that you are here tells me you are not, but let’s just talk a bit about why now is such a great time to organize.
A cluttered home can be stressful. Given the state of the economy and less money in the budget for travel, we are spending more time at home. So why not invest some time and energy making your home the peaceful haven that it can be for your family, while freeing up time to do things that are more fun than digging through the huge pile of paper on the kitchen counter looking for the power bill?
Spend less–use what you have. I wish I could list the number of times
I went out to purchase some item of clothing that I thought I needed, only to find I had the nearly identical item already in my closet or drawer. Now that I have a closet organizing method in place that allows me to know what I have and where to look for it, my duplicate purchases have been all but eliminated.
Share with others in our community. I was recently watching a story on the local news regarding a well known charity. They have more people than ever shopping in their retail locations, but the supply of donations was declining. What a wonderful motivation for purging my household of unneeded, unused items in good condition and get them into the hands of people who can really use them! That is truly a “win-win” situation.
Organizing does not have to be expensive. Being sure that you are using the organizing systems you have already put in place is completely free. Meanwhile, for those projects which require new containers or tools, consider investing in good quality items that will serve more than one purpose over time. Space Savers has a wonderful selection of products from which to choose. For example, I love using sturdy baskets (see http://www.spacesavers.com/3willbaskets.html) for my children’s toys. They are easy to carry, they stack, and are easily repurposed as storage tools in other rooms later.
So think about areas of your home that you may be avoiding due to the chaos, and pick one to tackle and get under control. Don’t be surprised if it inspires you to take on the other spaces on the list as well. It will really make a difference in how much you enjoy your home.
